For the perfect smile

While a dental clinic may be regarded as the worst place to go to by many people, dentistry as has grown into a popular industry that has immense possibilities for research and development of new products and technologies. One such advancement is the dental implant. After its first use in 1965, it came to be a boon for people who suffered from disintegrated or weak teeth.
But what is a dental implant? A layman would probably first think of gold or silver teeth, or maybe dentures. But they may be only half right. To put it plainly, a dental implant is a piece of titanium that resembles the shape of a tooth. It is placed inside the bone to restore the appearance to a group of teeth. The technical term is known as ‘endosseous implants’. Other dental prosthesis like bridges, crowns and dentures are supported using dental implants.
While there have been many advancements in terms of constructing dental implants, the basic concept can be found back in time, among some of the oldest civilizations. Research has shown that the Mayan community used shells to create fake teeth that were placed inside the mouth for support. The ancient Egyptians, (who were well-known for their knowledge of medicine) also used similar methods.
Centuries later, Dr. Leonard Linkow, a graduate in dentistry, was the first doctor to place a dental implant in a patient’s mouth in 1952. This method led to the writing of several books, and the creation of various patents. Dr Linkow is officially called the Father of Implant Dentistry. It was a Dr. Branemark , who used titanium to create a strong and durable implant for dental restoration. Dr. Branemark officially started using these implants in his practice in 1965. Today, more than seven million implants are produced and marketed across the world.
Now that one has a fair idea of what a dental implant is and what is its purpose, the obvious next question is: What are its advantages? Quite a few as one can see:
Implants give the appearance and feel of natural teeth.
The neighboring teeth are not affected in any way by the use of an implant.
Dental implants can provide confidence to speak and smile without any feelings of embarrassment.
If placed by a qualified and thorough professional, implants are long lasting.

But one has to be conscientious about good oral hygiene. Activities like flossing, brushing teeth twice a day are essential. It would be better reduce or even quit habits like chewing tobacco, smoking and drinking.
These can help prevent any form of gum disease or further disintegration of teeth.
